3 Simple Tips for your Child’s Dental Care

dca-blog_choosing-child-dentist

Healthy teeth do not happen by accident. It requires diligence to proper dental care habits, which every child must learn. Parents should teach their children about achieving and maintaining healthy teeth from a very early age. Many people do not realize that they can begin teaching their children the basics of dental care before their child’s first tooth even emerges. Tooth decay can occur at any age. Sadly, it is a rapidly growing problem for the youngest segment of the population.  As a parent, you can help reverse this trend by teaching your children about proper dental care using these three simple tips from family dentistry experts.

1. Baby teeth need dental care, too. While baby teeth may be only temporary, they need proper dental care. Failure to care for your child’s primary teeth can cause hard-to-treat or irreversible damage that can affect the development of their secondary teeth, cause problems with speech, and put your child at risk for disease. You can begin cleaning your child’s teeth before the first tooth even emerges, by wiping your baby’s gums with a soft cloth after feeding. When your child’s first tooth emerges, you can begin teaching them how to use a toothbrush and the importance of a dental care routine.  You will need to supervise and assist for several years to ensure proper cleaning occurs.

2. Eat healthy foods. Try to keep snack and meal choices in line with those recommended for a healthy diet, such as vegetables, lean proteins, and crunchy fruits. Avoid sugary foods like candy and fruit juices to protect your child’s dental health. Starchy foods like bread and crackers can also contribute to tooth decay, especially if this debris is not routinely removed. The sugar molecules in starchy and sugary foods can combine with oral bacteria and erode the tooth enamel. Help your child carefully clean his or her teeth and gums after meals and snacks, and after drinking milk and juice.

3. Start visiting a family dentistry expert at an early age. Take your child to an affordable dentist when his or her first tooth emerges. This will not only ensure that your child feels comfortable with dental care visits, alleviating potential for dental anxiety, but will also give you all the tools you need to maximize your child’s dental care. A family dentistry professional can help you with brushing techniques for children and even recommend dental care products designed for children. Plus, studies have shown that routine preventive visits to an affordable dentist makes dental care more affordable than for someone who skips routine visits. So schedule routine visits to the family dentistry office, be a good role model, and make dental care fun.
