Are You Brushing Your Teeth Properly?

dca-blog_basic-dental-care-blue-man

How much time do you spend each day brushing your teeth? Do you give your teeth as much attention as your hair or choosing what to wear?  Tooth brushing is a crucial habit that plays a significant role in your oral health, yet millions of Americans neglect to brush their teeth properly. Some fail to spend enough time, while other brush lazily along the front lines neglecting the hardworking back teeth. Others skip tooth brushing sessions regularly, thinking it has little effect on anything.  The truth is, your tooth brushing habits can dictate your risk for chronic disease, in addition to tooth decay and gum disease.

If you’re ready to dedicate a few more minutes each day to your tooth brushing routine, read these tips for the most comprehensive dental care:

  1. Use a toothbrush that properly fits your teeth. If you have large teeth, purchase a toothbrush with a fuller head, while those with smaller teeth may benefit from smaller toothbrush heads.
  2. Children should always use toothbrushes specially designed for kids. All toothbrushes should be ADA approved.
  3. Use only toothpaste approved by the ADA. Look for toothpaste that includes fluoride and has the ADA seal of approval. Some children’s toothpastes may have low or no fluoride because amounts of fluoride exposure should be minimal up to the age of six to avoid tooth discolorations.
  4. Rinse with mouthwash after brushing. Adults and adolescents can remove excess bacteria and debris by rinsing with an ADA-approved fluoride mouthwash after every brushing. Ask your family dentist before allowing young children to use mouthwash.
  5. Replace your toothbrush every three months or when the bristles become splayed, whichever comes first.
  6. Consider using an electric toothbrush. Electric toothbrushes have been shown to deliver better cleaning results than manual toothbrushes.

A thorough brushing can be very effective if you use the right technique:

  • Don’t miss a brushing session. Studies have shown that missing even one tooth brushing session of the recommended two per day can increase your risk of chronic disease by as much 70 percent.
  • Brush a minimum of twice a day for two minutes. Divide the mouth into quadrants and spend at least 30 seconds brushing each quadrant on all sides. Don’t neglect the inside or chewing surfaces of any teeth.
  • Brush after every meal, if possible. But, wait at least 20 minutes following eating to prevent spreading acids around the mouth that cause tooth decay.

Your dental care requires a team effort between you and your family dentistry experts.
