Foods That Will Give You an Award-Winning Smile

It is common knowledge that avoiding sugar is a cornerstone of proper dental care. But, did you know that keeping cavities at bay is also linked to the consumption of certain foods? There are several foods that you should consume regularly to keep your teeth healthy and strong. Fruits, vegetables, cheese and even sugarless gum can improve outcomes when it comes to dental care. Eating foods that are rich in sugar and starch actually feed the harmful bacteria in your mouth, creating acids that erode the tooth enamel and cause bad breath.

Regular brushing and flossing in combination with a healthy diet can ensure that your smile stays award winning. And, consuming these four foods and drinks can help make your visits to an affordable dentist in Westminster less costly, since healthy teeth and gums can save you from extensive dental work.

1. Crunchy Foods – Crunching on healthy fruits and vegetables like carrots and apples promotes saliva production and keeps bacteria from settling on your teeth, since chewing is linked to lower levels of plaque.

2. Cheese – Cheese is believed to help neutralize plaque acid and also increase saliva production to help wash away harmful bacteria. One study published in the journal, General Dentistry, reported that adolescents who ate cheddar cheese had lower acid levels in their mouths compared to those who drank a glass of milk or ate sugar-free yogurt.

3. Mineral-Rich Foods –Foods rich in calcium and phosphorous have been shown to contribute mineral deposits to acid-induced lesions on the teeth, reversing the development of a cavity. Foods containing calcium, like almonds, cheese, and leafy greens; and foods high in phosphorous, such as meat, eggs and fish are worthy choices for strong teeth. The American Dental Association recommends mineral-rich foods to strengthen the tooth enamel.

4. Tea – Black and green teas contain plant compounds called polyphenols that slow the growth of bacteria associated with cavities and gum disease. According to research at the University of Illinois at Chicago, subjects who rinsed their mouths with black tea for one minute, 10 times a day, had less plaque buildup on their teeth than people who rinsed their mouths with water. The amount and stickiness of the plaque was also reduced in these subjects. Researchers believe the tea inhibited the bacteria’s ability to clump together, limiting development of plaque and acids. Black tea was also found, in a 2010 study, to be effective against halitosis, the technical term for bad breath. The polyphenols suppress the production of smelly compounds in the mouth.
