Wisdom Teeth – Managing Your Third Molars

Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth, also called third molars, typically make their appearance in your late teens or early twenties. Some people have impacted wisdom teeth that are unable to erupt, and wisdom teeth removal is necessary. If you’re lucky, your third molars will grow in with no problems and function normally just like your other teeth. However, if you experience wisdom teeth pain, swelling, or infection, removal is the best option. Whatever you do, don’t ignore improperly positioned or impacted wisdom teeth.

Understanding Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Impacted third molars are extremely common. In fact, about 90 percent of people have at least one impacted wisdom tooth. Impacted wisdom teeth cannot erupt normally because of their position in the jaw; there is simply not enough room for them. They can place pressure on adjacent teeth, and they often cause serious damage or infection. Since the area is difficult to clean, the spread of oral bacteria is likely. If it invades your bloodstream, it can affect major organs like your heart and kidneys. It’s also common for a fluid-filled cyst to form around an impacted tooth. Cysts can be serious if they begin to damage the jawbone or affect nearby nerves or other parts of your face.

Surgical Management of Impacted Wisdom Teeth

In general, if you have periodontal gum disease, oral infections, untreatable cavities, cysts, tumors, or damage to other teeth, your impacted wisdom teeth should be removed by an oral surgeon. To remove impacted teeth, the surgeon makes an incision in the gum and extracts the teeth by removing bony tissues as necessary. It may take several weeks to recover fully from the wisdom teeth removal, but full recovery with few complications is the usual outcome.
